Choosing the Best Size for Your Sign

When designing a sign, the first thing that comes to mind might be colors and fonts. But many other vital elements need to be considered, like the size.

Signs come in lots of different sizes, but choosing the right size is more than just about preference. Whether your sign is big or small will come down to a variety of factors, and guessing is not one of them. Here are some things you should consider before choosing the size of your sign.

When it comes to branding, size does matter!

Viewing Distance

How far from your sign will your customers likely be located when they first get a glance at it? The larger the sign and font, the easier it will be to read, especially if people will read it from a distance.  If you want to put up a roadside sign, for example, people will be far enough that they will need letters to be significant to be able to read your message.

As a general guideline, consider 10 feet of distance for every inch of letter height. So, if people are going to be looking at your sign from 100ft away, you will want your lettering to be at least 10 inches high.

Visibility from Different Angles

In which direction are passersby or traffic coming? Understanding how visible your sign will be before placing it will also help you decide the most appropriate size for it. If your sign is going to be placed flat on a wall, you want to make sure people can see it correctly from different angles without having to turn around. Remember, you’ll only have about ten seconds to get their attention.

Signage Regulations

Your town or city has its own set of regulations in terms of signage. Before you decide on the size of your sign, be sure to take the time to understand the rules in your area. If your business location is in Boulder, you will want to check out the sign code for the City of Boulder before making any decisions.

Sign Design

If you need to fit an impactful sign in a small space, creating an attractive design will help cut down on the size of your sign. Proper use of color, contrast, and composition will help you achieve this.
